The FDA and HearSource’s Affordable Hearing Aid Distribution Business Model Efforts

One of the major impediments to the purchasing of hearing aids for many is cost. Recognizing this impediment to the hearing aid consumer, the Food and Drug Administration has announced changes to the laws, rules and regulations governing the dispensing of hearing aids in the United States.

Good daily maintenance and hearing aid hygiene go along way in preventing many of the common problems associated with hearing aid ownership. Many hearing aid repairs are due to to earwax contamination. The body creates earwax to clean our ear canals. Unfortunately, as the earwax migrates down the ear canal it makes contact with your hearing aids where the sound comes out of the hearing aid is called the sound outlet tube, earmold, or receiver, depending on the style of hearing aid you have. Most modern hearing aids will have a wax filter protecting where the sound comes out. Clean the wax filter with a brush (an old tooth brush is what I use) every morning before you put them in your ears. The reason I recommend cleaning them in the morning is that at the end of the day your ear wax is fresh, soft and sticky, but in the morning it has dried and brushes off easily.

Keep Your Ears Clean

In addition to keeping the hearing aids clean, it is also important for you to keep your ears clean. Earwax secretion is a natural and necessary function of healthy ears, but it can cause trouble if it gets into the sound outlet of your hearing aids. Use a washcloth to clean your ears on a daily basis.

If you think that your ear canals may have a build up of earwax, there are over the counter products you can use such as DeBrox or any other carbamide peroxide product. Follow the directions on the package for best results. If that doesn’t take care of it, I recommend that you see your physician for earwax removal.

It is strongly recommended that you do not insert cotton swabs or any other small or sharp object into your ears. Cotton swabs may push the earwax further down the canal and sticking anything small or sharp into your ears can puncture and cause permanent damage to your eardrum.

Electronics of any kind generally don’t like moisture. Prolonged exposure to or excessive moisture/perspiration is a leading cause of hearing aid repairs. For proper hearing aid care, when not wearing your hearing aids, open the battery door and allow your aids to dry out.

Use care when applying hairspray or other hair products. Hairspray applied while wearing hearing aids will clog the microphone ports leading to device failure. Don’t wear hearing aids while bathing, showering, swimming, etc.

If you are having issues with the performance of your hearing aids, try these simple steps before sending your hearing aids in for repair:

  • Make sure the hearing aid is turned on: This seems simple, but check anyway.
  • Check the volume: Make sure the volume control is at the correct setting and wasn’t accidentally turned down.
  • Check the battery: Put a fresh battery in your hearing aid. Even if you think you just put a fresh battery in, try in once more. Make sure that the batteries are not out of date.  Most battery packages have an expiration date on them. Don’t leave hearing aid batteries in your car or in direct sun.
  • Check your wax filter: Usually a little white or colored area where the sound comes out of the hearing aid and into your ear. Brush it with a brush. If you have a supply of wax filters, change it.  Replacement wax filters can be purchased from the HearSource Accessories Page.
  • BTE (behind-the-ear) hearing aids: If you wear BTE hearing aids, the tubing can sometimes become clogged with earwax or over time can shrink and become hard. Any hearing care professional can quickly and inexpensively clean or replace BTE tubing.

I Found My Online Hearing Aid Retailer

When my older Seimens hearing aid started making strange noises, it was time to replace it. Because hearing aids can be so expensive and aren’t covered by my insurance plan, painfully I had put it off. As I soon figured out, over the last decade, hearing aids have become even more confusing than shopping for a new car and almost as expensive. 🙁 I didn’t know at the time, but I would end up finding my answer with an online hearing aid retailer.

I first visited my local audiologist, in the Chicago area. The audiologist listened to my old hearing aid and advised me that it should be replaced. Having worn hearing aids for more than two decades (I have a moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears), so I fancied myself as a savvier hearing aid owner/buyer/shopper than many. I am a middle aged businessman, reasonably computer literate, and was determined to find the best deal on a set of hearing aids that would provide me a reasonably normal active hearing lifestyle.

Aren’t hearing aids basically just a microphone, amplifier, and speaker in your ear? It didn’t make sense to me why they should cost thousands of dollars each.

Feeling pressured, I ordered a set of the lower end models. Within a few hours, I called and canceled the order and begrudgingly began researching hearing aids on the internet. I learned that not only can you buy hearing aids online, but at Walmart, Sam’s Club and Costco; places where you typically purchase toilet paper and milk.

Undeniably, lower priced hearing aids are available from online retailers. Generally, prices run from $399 to $999 per unit, discount prices made possible by eliminating the middleman and the inefficient medical office model of dispensing hearing aids. Traditional retail/audiologist overhead may account for up to 70 percent of the total cost of hearing aids, because they bundle into the initial sales price all the anticipated service costs during the entire life cycle of the hearing aid.

There can be a downside to buying hearing aids online: with most online hearing aids, they need to be mailed back into the online dealer for sound or other adjustments, a dismal option.

Ultimately I found an online hearing aid retailer called “” At HearSource they had several different hearing aid technology levels to choose from with all the normal features, bells and whistles, that I had expected to find in entry to mid level hearing aid offerings. But what made them different and most importantly, they offered a “Personal Programmer Hearing Aid Kit”. This hearing aid programming kit allows me to do the fine tuning of my own hearing aids myself. Who can do it better than me I thought. I spent less than $1,300 on two hearing aids and the programming kit in total. The programming kit came with an eMiniTec hearing aid programmer, software, cables and instruction manual.

I initially needed a little assistance comprehending the hearing aid fitting software, HearSource hooked me up with my very own personal coach. My “Programming Coach” walked me through getting my hearing aids adjusted just right. He even remotely took over my computer and did a few of the adjustments for me. I am not easily wowed, but I was, hearing loss correction “Shangri-La” I perceived. I must say that with my previous hearing aids, I thought they had them adjusted pretty well, until now. I think some things get lost in translation when the audiologist asks you how you are hearing and you try to explain to them what you are hearing and then they try to make the necessary sound adjustments. Now nothing is lost in translation.

I have been wearing my new HearSource hearing aids for several months now and couldn’t be happier. I hear well. I have submitted articles to several hearing aid web review sites without publication. I have also submitted this review to and have authorized them to publish it in their blog.
