What is a CROS?
The acronym stands for Contralateral Routing of Signals. With a CROS system, a hearing aid is worn in both ears, although you can’t hear out of one of them. The sound detected by the CROS aid in the “bad ear” is transmitted to the hearing aid on the other side side (your better ear). This helps rid yourself of the “head shadow” effect.
With a CROS, you are now hearing sounds from both sides of your head, but all in just one ear.
How is a CROS Different From Other Hearing Aids?
Hearing aids amplify sound directly into the ear that they are worn in. With a CROS hearing aid, the CROS device is worn on the non-hearing ear (but looks looks like a traditional hearing aid). A CROS aid is really just a microphone that transmits the sound it picks up and sends it to the hearing aid on the other or better hearing ear.
